Grow in Wonderland: With love from my tiny yard

My crown of thorns.
I moved them outside because my friend told me that having thorny plants in your home is bad feng shui.  :P

My herb bowl and papaya tree.
Eventually I'd like to have more edible / fruit bearing plants.  I'd love to grow my own tomatoes and green beans.

Growing in Wonderland: Crown of thorns

Today I spent the morning with my parents. We had breakfast and next to the restaurant we were eating at, there was an outdoor plant sale. I've been wanting to start a garden in our tiny apartment backyard for a while. I've also been wanting to add some green to our indoor atmosphere. The plant sale was awesome. This one lady was selling the largest orchids I've ever seen! My mom bought one. There were also some cacti, but earlier today I purchased some potting soil and cactus seeds. Instead I got a great deal on some crown of thorns plants. They were only 3 for $10. I'll keep them indoors by the windows until they get too big, if they do. I looked it up online and the crown of thorns is originally from Madagascar. I thought that was interesting. The sap is poisonous like poison ivy, so they are up and away from Viva and Merlot. When they go outside they will also be elevated to ensure that Viva or any strays that wander in to our yard will be hurt. I'm pretty sure that the thorns will also be a deterrent though. :P

Growing in Wonderland: The results

I actually "harvested" my sprouts a couple weeks ago, but neglected to post the results. Sorry. They actually turned out really well. Next time I think I'll put in less beans so they have more room to grow.

Here it is! That's a lot of bean sprouts huh?

I used them to top the beef curry I made. :) Oishi!!!

Allan's mom found a special on mason jars on base. So now I have 10 new jars to grow sprouts in. I think I'm actually going to use some jars to make biscuit mixes though.

Growing in Wonderland: Sprouting

night 1

Night 2: 1 tiny sprout

Night 3: look at them grow

Last weekend I read an article from The Kitchn or Re-Nest (I forgot which it was) about how to sprout beans in a jar. So I bought a bag of mung beans and decided to try it out. Allan and I like cooking with bean sprouts so I thought it'd be fun and yummy! It's kind of exciting. Yes, I'm easily amused.
